HEROIN

What is heroin?

Heroin or diacetylmorphine is a very addictive drug derived from morphine, the main alkaloid from the poppy. Heroin can be snorted or smoked, the fact of smoking eliminates the stigma associated with the consumption of drugs by injection.

Consumption form :

Heroin can be injected, smoked or snorted. In any case, it still carries significant health risks.

The products are:
Natural products: morphine, codeine, papaverine.
Semisynthetic products: ethylmorphine, pholcodine, heroin.
Synthetic products: buprenorphine.

What are the effects?
Category : Depressor
Caractéristics : Morphine is extracted from opium or latex of white poppy. Heroin is produced from the chemical transformation of morphine.

Effects of opiates:
Intense brutal sensation of well-being.

Mental effects:

Heroin very quickly produces a strong dependence as physical as mental. They only think of getting high.

Different effects, going from euphoria to stupor and sleepiness.
  Calming of anguish.
Sensation of distance and evasion from reality.

Somatic effects:
Reheating, analgesia, mycosis, bradycardia, hypotension, reduced intestinal transit, libido diminution.
Respiratory depression that can bring to death by overdose –the product has more active principle – or after a period of abstinence – the tolerance has disappeared.

Dependence:

Heroin brings a strong physical and psychological dependence, she creates addition and needs an increasing dose to obtain the same effects and avoid the symptoms of detoxification.

These symptoms can be found from four or five hours after taking the last dose, and tears, muscular spasms, anxiety, shivering, diarrhoea for hypertension, irritability, shudder and insomnia, can be found from seven to ten days, with a more intense reaction between 48 and 72 hours.

METHADONE

We administer this substance to heroin addicts as substitute. It is a synthetic opiate whose effects are very similar to those of morphine. As they lasts almost 24 hours, a daily dose is enough. When the use of methadone has stopped, the symptoms of lack appear and usually remain more time and are more pronounced than those of heroin.

Methadone substitution programs are indicated only if they are well controlled and look for abstinence : otherwise the participants consume in parallel all kinds of drugs, even alcohol and tranquillizers. They risk themselves to become more and more invalids and won’t be able to work. The most important thing to remember is that Methadone is a drug (in England the number of deaths for methadone has increased from 16 to 131).

Legislation :
