Injection rooms in Netherlands started from ideas, in the field of harm reduction, with much emotion. The practice however is that a) most users use extra drugs; b) they are only some less criminal; c) drug help organizations earn (much) money in organizing and running the injection rooms, where as d) there is no stimulation what so ever to drug free programmes of those users - thus writing off all the participants and e)spilling much tax payers money.

Drug Free Australia opposes injection sites because, in reality, they maintain people on drugs rather than assisting them to heal from their addiction. The cost of resourcing the Injecting site in Kings Cross, Sydney, Australia, is enormous and funds would be far better utilised, if directed towards recovery-based rehabilitation. It creates a "honeypot" effect where those who deal in drugs gather to promote their sales to people who then enter the injection site to administer their illegal substance. The Kings Cross Injecting Room has been allowed to function because it is designated as a "trial" site and has been so for more than 7 years. Drug Free Australia calls for an end to this inappropriate and inefficient form of treatment for people addicted to drugs.

In Australia the supervised illicit drug injecting rooms had many problems.  People didn't get the help they needed to get well because funding was going to helping drug dealers keep addicts addicted and that does NOT help the addict to improve their long term health outcomes.  The evidence, on any view, demonstrates that injecting rooms delay the much needed medical help that addicts need to recover from their addiction and to improve their health.  Close the injecting rooms dooes and open recovery clinic doors and for the same money you get reduced crime and improved public health outcomes including reduce Hep C.  Government funds should be put into prevention, intervention, even drug screening to lead to detoxification and ongoing supported rehabilitation for recovery.  Ask the addicts do they want to stay an addict or get off drugs, its only drug dealers and the misled and misinformed who hope despite all the evidence that injecting rooms might do some good.

The injecting room did not improve public amenity.
The injecting room quite evidently drew drug dealers to its doors. Reductions in the number of public injections and discarded needles in Kings Cross decreased only in line with reduced distributions of needles due to the heroin drought. Recent reports indicate increases in publicly discarded needles. Currently a disturbing 1.6% of Australians have used heroin. However surveys show that 3.6% of NSW respondents say they would use heroin if an injecting room was available to them, most for the first time, potentially doubling the number who would use the drug.
